About 100 Words
25 April 2006
One Hundred Words is a learning project for young people that explores how the essence of a language and culture can be captured in just 100 words and provides a linguisitic and cultural bridge between the UK and China.
It is inspired by the changes evident in Beijing as it prepares to host the Olympic Games in 2008, particularly the way in which taxi drivers and other people working in the service industries are being encouraged by the government to learn 100 sentences for daily use in a foreign language.
One Hundred Words will encourage young people to create their own 100 word plays, both in theatre workshops and using resources online. We will help them play and have fun with words – choosing their favourite words from both languages, building characters through dialogue and writing short plays. And we will also help them to produce their plays and make them available, in theatres or here on the 100wordplay website, to audiences around the world.
