Young Advocates Programme

The Young Advocates Programme is a British Council initiated project, organised in partnership with the Chinese Disabled Persons Federation. The programme aims to create a network of up to 250 able and disabled young advocates, aged 18 to 25, across the globe. Through workshops and training the young advocates will develop leadership and communication skills, enabling them to contribute to their local communities by raising awareness of social inclusion. The ambition of the Young Advocates Programme is to develop an international legacy for the Paralympic Games in Beijing this year, London in 2012 and beyond.

The Young Advocates Programme was launched in China , where it will culminate in an international Youth Forum in Beijing during the Paralympic Games in September. At this event China 's young advocates will be joined by other young advocates from around the world. 100 Words is delighted to have been invited to run a skills workshop at the Youth Forum along with other practitioners from the UK including Northern Ballet Theatre and YeastCulture.

CHINA NOW

CHINA NOW - the UK 's largest ever festival of Chinese culture - was launched at the Chinese New Year 2008 and continues through to the Beijing Olympics

With over 1,300 events across the UK, CHINA NOW has showcased the very best of modern Chinese society and culture, and offered an insight into China 's history.

Visit www.chinanow.org.uk/events for full details of all events.

The CHINA NOW 100 Words Schools Competition encouraged young people from linked schools in China and the UK to explore what they have in common through the medium of a creative language learning project.

Taking the theme of ' cultural similarities and differences ', the competition was open to secondary schools in both countries that are already working in partnership together. It encouraged them to further develop their work by writing two 100 word plays, one in English to be filmed by the Chinese school and one in Chinese to be filmed by the British school. The films were posted onto a secure website, where the partner schools were able to see each others' plays and make suggestions for changes up until the entry deadline.

The films were judged by a panel of experts drawn from China and the UK . Two first prizes have been awarded, which will enable up to five students and one member of staff from two Chinese schools to visit the UK in the autumn for a week-long programme with their partner schools. The programme will include a three day 100 Words workshop in London .

The CHINA NOW 100 Words Schools Competition was run in partnership with the British Council and was sponsored by HSBC.

about 100 words

100 Words is a project for young people, tapping into their creativity and creating global connections.

Inspired by preparations for the Beijing Olympics (where people are being encouraged to learn '100 sentences of a foreign language'), 100 Words will build over the next five years towards London 2012, generating thousands of plays, films, musicals and operas - each written using just 100 words.
