100 Words is a project for young people that unlocks their creative potential and creates global connections.
Inspired by changes in Beijing as it prepared to host the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where people were encouraged to learn ' 100 sentences of a foreign language ', 100 Words aims to capture the essence of a language and culture in thousands of short plays and films - each written using just a hundred words.
There are two main programmes - an artist development programme for aspiring young writers, performers and directors, and a creative language learning programme for young language learners and teachers. Over 2,000 people have taken part in 100 Words in China and the UK, with thousands more viewing plays and films created during project activity and engaging in online interaction.
The first phase of 100 Words culminated in 2008 with schools workshops in Caister-on-Sea in Norfolk; the launch of the CHINA NOW 100 Words Schools Competition; a residency at Theatre503 in London involving two artists from Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre; a week at Theatre 9 in Beijing working with young writers, actors and directors sourced by Beijing Dramatists Association; involvement in the British Council's Young Advocates Programme International Youth Forum during the Paralympic Games in Beijing; and workshops with teachers and students in Guangzhou schools.
The film we made during the winners' week for the CHINA NOW 100 Words Schools Competition, which brought together students and teachers from four British and Chinese schools, captures how our project can be a catalyst for intercultural dialogue.
